3rd November 2006 - My chronicle to get another chronicle

I have always wanted another Murakami's book after finish reading his Norwegian Wood. It was impressively written. I burnt the midnight oil and finished it in 3 days time. (HAHA!Hey! I am always more hardworking when it comes to books!I meant, story books!=P)

With recommendation from Devilboy, I finally made up my mind to look for this one particular book " The Wind-up Bird Chronicle".

I went to a lot of MPHs, Kinokuniya, Popular before today. I realised it is very very hard to even see books from him on the shelves. It seems to be rare, especially in mega bookstores. I begin to think that this author is selling his books like hot cakes! Even Devilboy said the same thing. He could not find another copy of that book until today. It was like, Su li bought the last one! I am getting more excited to get this book. wahaha.

Today, I continued my "journey" to look for it. I was in KL Sentral to meet my client this morning. After the meeting, I went to MPH at the ground floor(Was thinking that, maybe, they will have something there). I could see only 1 book from him. The one and only book by him. But it was not the title that I wanted. I left in 10 minutes.

I dropped by Bangsar, hoping that I will find 1 in MPH Bangsar. During my drive to Bangsar, I was telling myself,"If there's a park nearby,I will go and have a look. Otherwise, I will go". I end up rounding Bangsar street for a few more rounds. I dont know why I did that, but when I finally found a park nearby Madam Kwan, I was so happy that I just parked my car without further obligations, without realising that MPH was actually VERY VERY far from where I was.

It hit me once I got off from the car. Haha. I felt so silly for a moment until I saw the 2 floors big bookshop at the corner. It seems new. And interesting.

I quickly walked upwards to the store. It truly is dissapointing. The store assistant never even heard of the author name. =( Dissapointing. I left immediately, thinking, maybe I should look for it in MPH Bangsar Village.

I walked downwards to Bangsar Village. When I walked pass Madam Kwan, I saw a standee signage saying "Silverfish Books. Asian cultures, science, arts....bla bla bla... books." I gave the place a chance. Maybe this has something that megastores dont have.

It is located on the first floor. I walked up the stairs. It gave me a feeling that I am actually walking to a dance studio, or fame studio, or theatre studio. When I open the leaf door, I saw an Indian man (mid thirties) and a big sized chinese lady (late twenties?). They stop talking when they saw me walking in.

For a moment, I thought I am at the wrong place until I saw books and books on the shelves. Do you have Haruki Murakami's books? I asked timidly. Unsure if I should be there.

what is the title of the book? The lady asked.
"...err..bird chronicle...."
"ahh..The wind-up bird chronicle! Here!"
She walked quickly to the right and ushered me to the 2nd shelves from the front.

"Ahh! You have it ! " I smiled. And looked up. "I...". I wanted to continue talking, but...
The indian guy seems to be irritated with me...
Did I say something wrong?
The lady just smiled quickly...Is something wrong with me??
They continued talking to each other with well spoken english. Ignoring me.

Maybe, this is their culture here. Help yourself service,if possible.

I squat there for awhile, admiring the book that I finally found. I found a few more others by Murakami. And they are all with ORIGINAL COVERS!!! Devilboy got to come here! Haha!

I think I have fell in love with this place instantly.

While at the counter to pay, I made a stupid comment. I said "I would not have found here if it is not for the sign board you have downstairs.." Nobody answered me.

The lady looked at the Indian guy for awhile, and smiled. I felt so stupid for a moment.
I just paid it and said thanks. And left.

Eventhough I felt so stupid, I still want to go back to that place. Especially after checking out their websites. www.silverfishbooks.com.

They are Malaysia's leading publisher of Postcolonial and World Literature bookstore. A bookstore where import books that are not in the megastore shelves, and sometimes not even amazon.com! In another words, RARE.

This shop is also the shop where Malaysian International Literature Society (MILS) meets. Now, I know why they are irritated with my comments. I just showed them that I am not aware of their existance when they are actually famous. I am not observant enough..Aiks.. I feel so small for awhile.

ANd you know what? I actually parked RIGHT in front of this shop! Fate actually brought me there and I didnt open my eyes big enough to see what is in front.

I am silly. *blink*blink*
